frequently asked questions (FAQ)

WE ANSWERED EVERY QUESTION YOU MAY HAVE OR MADE WONDERING ABOUT DİREN.

  • Do wines have an expiration date?

There is no recommended consumption timing written on wines, because many people perceive it as an expiration date. Wines do not have an expiration date, but it is recommended to consume them within the recommended consumption timing, that is, at a time when the wine will not lose its aromas that determine its identity.
The recommended consumption timing for red wines is 5-10 years after bottling, the recommended consumption timing for rosé wines is 1-3 years after bottling, and for white wines it is 2-5 years.

  • How can we preserve wine?

Before opening, it should be stored horizontally, at a temperature of 15-20 degrees, in a dark, vibration-free and odor-free environment..

  • How many days can we consume wine after it is opened?

It should be consumed within 2-3 days, kept tightly closed in the refrigerator.

  • Are the wines you produce dessert wines?

Alcohol leaves a sweet feeling when the alcohol content is 14% and above and is drunk slightly cool. This reason may leave an impression that the wines are sweet.
The majority of our portfolio consists of dry wines, and we also have wines in the demi-sweet, semi-sweet and dessert classes.

  • What causes color differences in wines?

In order to obtain red color during the red wine making process, skin maceration is done, that is, the wine is left in contact with the skin for a while, during which color substances pass into the wine. In white and rose wine production, grapes are sent directly to be pressed. The color of white grapes is yellow-light green, while red grapes produce juice in pink tones.

  • Do you use additives in your wines?

There are no additional additives other than sulfur used as a preservative..

  • Is sulfur used in the production of wines?

Sulfur is added to all our wines to prevent microbiological spoilage.

  • I have wine from the years 1975-1980-1990, can I consume it? Or would you consider buying back these wines, do they have financial value?

Wine from previous years has passed the recommended consumption period and has lost its aromatic structure that indicates the identity of the wine. The wine is not spoiled, it is suitable for consumption, but it will not make you feel the pleasure during the recommended consumption period..

  • Are your wines vegan?

    All our wines are vegan.

  • The X yield of the same product was very good, why does the new Y yield taste different?

Due to climate differences in each harvest, the grapes from our vineyards may show different characteristics in terms of body, structure and aroma over the years.

  • Is it normal for there to be sediment at the bottom of the wine?

Particularly in red wines, sediment can naturally be observed after 5 years of age. At younger ages, it may cause sedimentation if it is not stored at the appropriate temperature; sedimentation is not observed in white and rosé wines. Tiny white crystals may appear in white and rosé wines in very cold environments (when forgotten in the refrigerator). These are natural acid crystals, they do not mean that the wine has spoiled; can be consumed safely.

DİREN, A brand originating from Tokat's fertile lands of viticulture and fruit growing. We will tell about the journey of DİREN, a journey that started with a sincere and genuine relationship with grapes and the dream of bringing the products produced from Turkish grapes to their potential..

The sprouting of an ideal; 1940s..

Born in the fertile lands of Tokat, Mustafa Vasfi DİREN's education in agricultural science, fermented grape products, which he became interested in at a young age, and his belief that the development of a country can be achieved through its agricultural talent, established a bond between him and this special fruit. This passion enabled sustainable benefit to the country, land and people to turn into action.

It is necessary to find a way to evaluate the farmer's product; M. Vasfi DİREN, who said, "Our fertile lands can only be valued with value-added products", would put his world of thought into action exactly 18 years later..

1958: First Production

The passion of an idealist young man who believed in the soil turned into 15 tons of product in a workshop he set up in his own home in 1958, after a long and meticulous planning and experience acquisition (baking) period, 18 years of effort and patience.

Welcome to Dörtnal Manufacturing.

In the first years of the production of the product, Vasfi DİREN, who used very old product jars obtained from the villages and evaluated the Narince grape, which carries the abundance of Tokat's thousands of years of terroir and the elegance of its ancient culture, did not have the financial means to bottle it. In order to evaluate the products, he opened the "Dörtnal Manufacturing Plant" in Tokat. He opened "a winehouse" in today's words. The first brand of DİREN products was "DİREN Dörtnal", which sends a greeting to the Ömer Hayyam rubies produced from Tokat's Narince grape.

1963: A Turk in love with his job:

A grape from Turkey in the world's literature of fermented grape products. In 1963, a turning point occurred for both the "DİREN Dörtnal" and the Narince grape. Only DİREN Dörtnal won the award in the 'Best Product' category in the International Competition held for the first time in Turkey. The President of the Jury, who was very surprised that such a product was produced in Turkey and curiously asked where it was produced, commented, "This man is in love with his job" when he learned the conditions under which it was produced. Thus, the world got to know the Narince grape together with DİREN.

60s: New discoveries.

In the mid-1960s, DİREN products began to utilize the fruits of Mahlep, known as the rootstock fruit of sour cherries and cherries, grown in the mountains of Tokat. This is how the story of Mahlep, which has become one of the rising values of the world's fermented grape products and has become DİREN's signature product, began.

A family's passion meets the world's knowledge.

With his belief that his products can be produced with passion and that they can reach higher levels by transferring knowledge and experience over generations, he decided to send his children to education and training in Turkey and abroad. While Ali Rıza DİREN, one of Vasfi Bey's sons, was studying Beverage Technologies abroad, his brother Erol DİREN was studying Mechanical Engineering. The sisters' education was also directed towards fields such as Finance and Food Engineering. His elder son, Orhan Ziya DİREN, studied Oenology (Viticulture Engineering) at the Faculty of Science of Dijon University, France, between 1968 and 1973.

Orhan DİREN, who became Turkey's first Oenologist with this training, was selected to the Jury Panel of the competition held in Hungary in 1969. The DİREN brand was participating in a competition abroad for the first time and returned home with Gold Medals.

1980s: How Narince and other grape species were saved...

The DİREN brand played a major role in overcoming a crisis that would risk the sustainability of Narince, a native of Tokat, which it introduced to world grape literature. Phylloxera disease, which spread all over the world in the 1980s, quickly turned into a global threat to vineyards. The agricultural struggle launched in 1984 against the impact of this threat on Narince and other grape species in our country started and grew with the support of the DİREN brand. If that struggle had not been fought that day, it would not be possible to talk about Narince or any other grape species in Tokat today..

2000s: A dream come true with Kazova Farm.

Vasfi DİREN passed away in 1987. He bequeathed to his children, whom he prepared for the future, not only a growing company, but also great ideals and the determination and passion to make these ideals sustainable. In 2003, DİREN started to utilize 5414 decares of land in partnership with TİGEM.

"Kazova Farm" plays a very important role in the sustainability and dissemination of Narince and other grape varieties in Turkey today. In addition to many studies on agriculture, fruit growing and animal husbandry, studies on grape production are also carried out here. “Collection Ties” of the DİREN brand are also located here..

2010's..

For thousands of years, these lands have hosted us and many civilizations, their differences have been blended, developed together, and become richer... Inspired by this, DİREN, in the 2010s, interpreted Anatolian grapes outside Tokat and foreign grapes hosted by Anatolia with its wisdom and expertise, and offered it to its consumers in a wide product portfolio. . DİREN was among the top 10 brands in Turkey. It started its sales abroad. It has become a registered brand in the world and in Turkey with tens of awards.

Reinterpretation of Grape Culture: 2020s..

Grapes, soil and people, which are the starting point of this great passion passed down through generations, have always had a special place for this brand. Vasfi DİREN believed in the miracle, abundance and spirit of this place where the products started. He cultivated the soil of his birthplace, Tokat, and then his sons and grandchildren, with an endless passion to reach forward, and then the Anatolian lands... They touched the leaves of the vine with the meticulousness of a craftsman, aiming to establish the link between the heritage of the past and the future in each bunch of grapes. As they worked hard, the rare climate and soil of Tokat and Anatolia were becoming richer, more beautiful, and pregnant with original, brand new tastes... It was reaching forward...

DİREN is not content with just ensuring that the grapes grow forward, it blends its philosophy, which has been passed down through generations, with the culture of this land and brings people together with its products. With DİREN, you remember your connection with the culture of this land and get closer to its abundance, crowds, passion and fascination. Most importantly, with RESIST, you get closer to each other and reconnect with yourself and your culture.
